Going the extra mile to achieve The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a fun programme of activities designed to build confidence and improve essential skills and attributes for life such as resilience, problem solving, teamwork and communication.

Our Year 10 students joined students from Spalding Academy, Bourne Academy and Giles Academy last weekend to complete a training expedition for their Bronze Award with a two-day weekend trip to Sacrewell Farm and the surrounding countryside.

The trip involved a 10 mile walk each day carrying everything they needed for their expedition and learning how to navigate, set up their campsite, and cook on a camping stove, with some even staying in a tent for the first time.

Miss Gemma Sanderson, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Lead at South Lincolnshire Academies Trust said “The students all did exceptionally well and should be very proud of themselves. All groups have learned a number of new skills and have demonstrated excellent resilience over the course of the weekend.”

To achieve the Bronze Award, students have to complete four sections. Three of these are completed independently over a period of three or six months, the fourth of which is the expedition section. The independent sections involve volunteering to support a local charity or organisation, learning a new skill and taking part in a physical activity.

Students will be completing their qualifying expedition next month where they will be able to demonstrate the skills they have learnt to their assessors.
