SALAD is great for improving presentation skills and confidence!

Three times each academic year our students enjoy SALAD teaching days, which are designed to improve presentation and oral skills as well as build confidence.

This doesn’t involve a trip to the canteen for a healthy lunch, but SALAD actually stands for ‘Speaking And Listening Activity Day’ and is where all of the lessons for the day involved little or no writing to encourage students to speak and listen.

This innovative communications initiative is for students in Years 7 to 10 in all schools across the Trust, and for the first time at Bourne Academy, this has been extended to include Year 12 in Sixth Form.

Normally, the classrooms around school are quiet and calm, but the decibels were notched up as we encouraged students to learn differently for the whole day. There was debating, presenting, group discussion, teamwork activities and much more.

It did not matter what the subject was, everyone was able to interact and we could tell our students loved this way of learning on the day as it pushed them out of their comfort zones and helped improve their social skills.

These engaging days take place three times during the academic year and the feedback from our students is that they love the different activities our staff have planned for them as is creates a real buzz around the teaching and learning.
