Enterprise events from Worldwide Fruit inspires future careers

Our careers team are always providing fantastic opportunities for our students to discover the many careers and industries available to them. This enables students to think about the different possibilities for their future career, which supports their Post 16 options and applications.

Over the last two months, we have welcomed Worldwide Fruit from Pinchbeck who have delivered a series of interactive and fun enterprise events to give Year 7 and Year 9 students an insight into the world of work. Rob King, Logistics Manager at Worldwide Fruit has been at the forefront of these workshops by focusing on the challenges that face businesses today.

Year 7 had a fascinating logistics workshop where they had to map the journey of a Jazz apple from New Zealand to Scotland and were amazed to learn that the apples we buy from a supermarket will have been picked in New Zealand up to 4 months ago! They also looked at the staffing structure of the company and the different jobs required along the whole food chain.

The challenge for our Year 9 students was to reduce fruit wastage by creating a new food product using a budget of £500. Working in small groups, they had to appoint a Team Leader, Product Development Manager and Finance Manager by deciding who had the best skills for each role. Once their new product had been agreed, the teams worked on costings and logo design before presenting back to their peers.

The teams worked really hard on coming up with innovative products that ranged from smoothies, ice lollies, drinks and cakes with many having a clear message of helping disadvantaged and struggling families. The winning group used the seeds from apples to plant an orchard, thereby seeing a full life cycle for the apple.

In both of the events, it was great to see the students working in teams and take themselves out of their comfort zone to present and show leadership qualities.
