The BTEC Tech Award in Art & Design: 3D Art & Design is a vocational qualification closely linked to the demands of the industry. Students will work on set assignments and produce work that meets a brief, just as a real artist or designer would.
The course is designed to prepare and provide students with a choice of routes into further education or employment. It is equivalent to 1 GCSE with a Distinction*, Distinction, Merit or Pass grade. Each assignment will have every task written in detail and it will be very clear to students what they must hand in to achieve a pass, merit, or distinction.
This is course is ideal for students who have a strong interest in 3D Art and Art & Design and may wish to move towards a career in some aspect of the industry. Examples of this may be Architecture, Product Design, Set Design, Interior Design, Furniture Design and Costume Design.
Students will be required to explore a broad range of 3D processes, ensuring the use of drawing is used to develop and support their ideas.
The 3D design course is an exciting and diverse programme. Students will explore and experiment with the creation, manipulation and application of a range of materials such as: clay, cardboard and papers, and processes such as slab building, coil building, glazes, decorative slips and surface design and mixed media to create final outcomes that explore surface pattern and texture, these can take the form of vessels, decorative pieces and work relating to artists. Students will use the visual language of the subject sensitively and thoughtfully to support their intentions.
Students will cover the following units in their design briefs during Year 10 and the first half of Year 11:
- Generating Ideas in Art & Design
- Developing Practical Skills in Art & Design
In the second half of Year 11, students will complete an externally set assignment. This will take place over a period of 10 weeks of lesson time, allowing students to prepare a practical project with their teacher support. Students will then have 10 hours to produce a final outcome in controlled conditions.
