Raising aspirations and exploring new careers with ‘Job of the Week’

Raising aspirations and exploring new careers with 'Job of the Week'

An important part of our careers programme is to raise aspirations, so we encourage our students to explore a wide range of jobs including many they may have never considered before. We aim to make them aware of as many opportunities as possible so they can make informed decisions in the future.

At Cowley Academy, this careers education starts from Year 7 as we incorporate ‘Job of the Week’ into tutor time for all year groups. Each week, the whole class learns about a new job as we cover the key skills required, the pathways to employment, career progression and labour market information covering salaries.

By making this a regular activity each week, this means over the academic year, our students learn about over 30 jobs. As well as this, on our website our students can discover 130+ other jobs ranging from Accountant to Hydrogeologist and Illustrator to Zoologist.

Some of the diverse range of jobs we have featured this term include App Developer, Rail Track Maintenance Worker and Fitness Instructor. If students would like us to feature a specific career for a future ‘Job of the Week’, they can speak to the careers team in school.
